Google Reader Share: Google Kills Lively

Happy to see this end up in the deadpool, now when will second life fold?

Even Google is getting into the downsizing spirit. It just announced that it is killing Lively, its browser-baseed virtual worlds that could be embedded into other Websites. Lively launched just last July. The death notice on the site says it will shut down on December 31, so we are adding Lively to the deadpool.

Lively just never took off, and was extremely far afield for Google. A post on the Google Blog explains the decision:

. . . we want to ensure that we prioritize our resources and focus more on our core search, ads and apps business.

We should have known something was up when we noticed that it didn’t work with Google’s own browser, Chrome. It’s Google Website Trends chart says it all. After an initial spike, it flat-lined. Hype can only go so far.

Maybe Google didn’t kill Lively so much as mercifully pull the plug. This is a good sign actually that Google is willing to weed out non=performing products. What else is being cut at Google? What else should be?

So Louis Vuitton has a custom service where they make exclusive one-of-a-kind items for exclusive client who can afford it.

And one such client is Uncle Karl! Apparently Karl Lagerfeld has Betty Ford like tendecies to his iPod. Dude has about 20 of them. So naturally he needs so way to store and carry them because they all have to travel with him we figure. Thus he commisioned Louis Vuittton to handle the task.

The result is this case made of black Taiga leather with brass fittings and red microfiber inside. An interior case holds 20 iPods and power charger and there are compartments for JBL iPod speakers and subwoofer.

Google Reader Share: Google to Host LIFE Magazine’s Photo Archive

Google has announced that they’re now hosting LIFE magazine’s massive photo archive online. Google images will now contain one of the world’s biggest photo collections, with images and etchings from the 1750’s to present day. Around 10 million images will be available, and reportedly 97% of them have never been published before. Former TIME publisher Henry Luce’s collection is included as well which contains the entire works of Life photographers Alfred Eisenstaedt, Gjon Mili and Nina Leen, the Zapruder film of the Kennedy assassination; Dahlstrom glass plates of New York from the 1880’s; and Hugo Jaeger’s images of Nazi-era Germany. Hi-res images are available for free online, and print versions can be purchased straight from Google. This initiative is part of Google’s ongoing mission to “organize all the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful”.

Google Reader Share: Why Aren't All Smithsonian Board Meetings Public?

Billed as its first public meeting, the Smithsonian Institution's Board of Regents' question-and-answer session yesterday with Smithsonian-ologists may have been therapeutic but it wasn't a sufficient step towards greater transparency: It didn't reveal to the public what goes on at the closed-door meetings where the Smithsonian's business really gets done.

The public Q&A's unasked question that needs an answer is this:

Since the Smithsonian is a quasi-federal agency, created by Congress, subject to Congressional oversight and primarily funded from federal tax dollars, why aren't those business meetings required to be open under federal open-meeting laws?

Some matters, such as personnel issues or litigation-related discussions, would have to go into executive session. But why the secrecy surrounding discussion about such matters as "Gift and Endowment Actions" and "Deaccession of the National Air and Space Museum's B‐17G Aircraft"?

Here's the complete agenda for yesterday's closed business session (which included the above items). You tell me why these discussions should be entirely concealed from public view.

If the Smithsonian is truly serious about improved transparency, its own board meetings are the place to start.

Google Reader Share: Amazon’s CloudFront Could Storm Rival CDNs

Today Amazon Web Services launched the beta version of its content delivery network service called CloudFront. As Om mentioned in September when the service was announced, this is a good move for Amazon, and something that may put the hurt on fellow CDNs such as Limelight and Akamai. Amazon will charge a usage-based fee, rather than a long-term contract, bringing CDN prices even lower for smaller web players who don’t have the scale to negotiate lower prices. Here’s how it works from the release:

The service caches copies of content close to end users for low latency delivery, while also providing fast, sustained data transfer rates needed to deliver popular objects to end users at scale. CloudFront works seamlessly with Amazon S3, where users store the original versions of objects delivered through the service. Customers need only put their objects into an Amazon S3 bucket and then register that bucket with the new service using a simple API call, which then returns a domain name used to access content through the network of edge locations.

Werner Vogels, CTO of Amazon, explains all about CloudFront on his blog.

A content delivery service that would extend Amazon S3 has been something that is very high on the wish list of our customers. They were already successfully using Amazon S3 for some of their content distribution needs, but many wanted the choice to do so with even lower latency and with higher data transfer rates to any place in the world.

He goes on to explain:

Using Amazon CloudFront is dead simple. Many of our private beta customers have reported that it only took them 10-15 minutes from the moment that they first signed up for the service to the moment that Amazon CloudFront was distributing their content.

The second Amazon Web Services principle that sets Amazon CloudFront apart is that no upfront commitments are necessary and you only pay for what you have used. There are no upfront fees or high volume requirements and no negotiations are necessary because we have published low prices from the start.

The second point is the more disruptive one. When Amazon announced its CDN in September we wrote,

Akamai is less likely to be impacted in the near term, but it further commoditizes the CDN business and forces a big shakeout in the industry, taking down the small and the weak. Akamai has been focusing on value-add services, as a way to stay ahead of the commoditization of the basic CDN services.

With prices ranging from 17 cents per gigabyte for the first 10 terabytes sent out a month, to 9 cents per GB for everything over 150 TB, the service seems to undercut the pricing offered by other CDNs for small to medium sized customers. It might be a good thing that Akamai’s looking at diversifying into online advertising.

Google Reader Share: Tarpipe Helps Spread The Content Love

Startup tarpipe is aiming to simplify the workflow of posting on social media sites. Their API enables users to do progressive things with their content in single actions. You can upload a photo from an email, have it post to a few such as uploading a photo, announcing this action with a tweet, sending an IM to a friend and send an email (and can do so at the same time). It does this without forcing the user to install a desktop or mobile application.

Their blog highlights some of the interesting projects their product is leading to, such as extending battery life while using location based service and make EverNote do some cool things.

The big question for me is in how it will be used, and how it will differ from just creating a social media power user megaphone. I can see some people setting it up so that their Twitter, Pownce, away message, Jaiku, Flickr, Friend Feed, Tumblr and Plurk update every time they see fit, which would create an almost embarrassing echo chamber.

They are strong advocates for open source, and with their API can imagine some creative uses. Currently, I see uses that are neat (use IM to update your twitter) to useful (uploading your photos to several places) but don’t see a use of their API that absolutely shines. Yet.

It’s been said that K-Guy is next in line for the street art crown. Approaching fast on Banksy’s heels, the UK based artist has produced a series dubbed the “Sleep Easy Family Bank”. Riffing off the idea that keeping money under your mattress is safer than keeping it in a bank, K-Guy painted and placed several of his “personal banks” around London. The series consists of real mattresses of varying sizes with owner’s names and assorted bank marketing slogans stenciled on the surface. More images at Flickr.

Off The Cuff

The folks over at AskMen.com recently sent me a link to their profile of industrial giant, and father of Fiat, Gianni Agnelli. This founder of the wear-your-watch-on-your-sleeve club was a consummate clothes horse. Of course his clothes were lovely hand made heirlooms so well crafted that his equally eccentric grandson Lapo Elkann still wears them.

The profile is pithy but well done and highlights Agnelli's flair for the functionally dramatic. What really caught my attention though, was the collection of additional profiles listed at the bottom of the page. JFK, Barack Obama, Kanye West and the last three decades of James Bond, to name but a few. Each one is a succinct shot of what specifically makes them an icon of style and how specifically you can create your own interpretation of their style. Normally I give these sorts of things short shrift because they are so often thin cliches. Not so these brief nuggets of history and fashion.

I think they are a great resource for classic and classy looks that stand the test of time. They also throw out small but fascinating nuggets of information, like the make of sweater worn by Jack Kennedy during his iconic walk through the suft of a Massachusetts beach. It was a J. Press pima cotton v-neck and you can still buy it today. Or that the watch worn by President Elect Obama is in fact a chronograph given to him by his Secret Service detail. It's actually from the Secret Service store and has the agency's shield logo emblazoned on it's face.

Now, that's the sort of stuff that I find interesting. Taking the time to put objects in their context and not just saying "this is cool, wear it"; helps the reader to understand where things come from and how they can make them their own.
